If you’re in the market for a new RV, there are lots of factors you need to consider. If you’re interested in towing a camper, but don’t have a powerful tow vehicle, you may be interested in the smaller, more lightweight subclass. It can be hard to find an RV that combines a functional living space with the storage of a toy hauler, but it is possible to accomplish both tasks!
Below we’ll cover some basic information about toy haulers, as well as 8 of the best small models on the market today.
What Is A Toy Hauler?
When I first hear the term “toy hauler” I immediately imagined some kind of portable storage bin for children’s toys. However, the real thing is a lot bigger and a lot better for RV enthusiasts!
Toy haulers are RVs that have a large garage space built into their floor plan. They can be built into the frame of travel trailers, fifth wheels, and even some motorhomes! These large storage spaces can be used to carry jet skis, ATVs, snowmobiles, kayaks, and other bulky equipment. You won’t need to bring them separately or create a long towing chain behind your vehicle.
If you’re going on an extended camping trip, toy haulers can also be great for storing your extra gear! If you prefer outdoor camping to RV trips, then this is an awesome portable trailer option. A lot of toy haulers combine the garage space with a comfortable living area though, so you don’t necessarily have to choose between the two options.
Average Toy Hauler Size
Toy haulers are generally pretty big, especially when they’re combined with fully outfitted living spaces. The garage area takes up a fair amount of space, so they’re large by nature. However, there are some models that have been designed to be smaller and lighter.
There’s a fair amount of variety, but on average, you can usually expect toy haulers to be about 33 ft long and weigh 10,000 lbs. At the smaller end, some are only about 25 feet long, while others can be up to 45 feet long!
When we discuss small toy haulers in this article, we’ll be referring to toy hauler RVs that are less than 30 feet long. These are large enough to contain the garage space that defines a toy hauler, but they’re also small enough to be towed by a variety of vehicles. Although many toy haulers are combined with fifth wheels, this list will only cover travel trailers. This is because fifth-wheel models require trucks to tow them. Fifth wheels also tend to be larger and heavier, so it’s more difficult to find small toy haulers with that kind of design.
