The most powerful engines usually come with the most expensive trims. So, today, we’re analyzing the powerplant options available within a specific model, and not standalone options such as the TRX and Raptor.
With that being said, let’s start with one of the most popular pickup truck segments in the US.
Most Powerful Pickup Trucks In The Full-Size Segment
Full-size pickup trucks are extremely popular in the US, with the Ford F-Series being the most popular vehicle in 2025, having sold an impressive 828,000 units.
However, the F-150 is not the most powerful pickup truck in the full-size segment. That honor belongs to another one.
Ram 1500

The most powerful full-size pickup truck is the Ram 1500 with the Hurricane I-6 3.0L engine in the High-Output configuration, available in higher trims such as the Tungsten and Limited.
These trims have 4WD as standard, so part of the power is constantly used to move all four wheels in an already heavy vehicle. However, the Ram 1500 is still very fast.
Tests have shown the 540 horsepower can take the Ram 1500 to 60 mph in a blistering 4.2 seconds.
Although many prefer the V8 for towing, the Hurricane Inline-6 also performs well, offering 521 lb-ft. of torque. While it’s not class-leading, it’s a solid option.

Honorable Mention
The Toyota Tundra delivers 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, placing it in a solid second place on our list.
Most Powerful Pickup Trucks In the Midsize Segment
Midsize trucks are becoming increasingly popular because they offer great performance, a reasonable size for urban environments, and excellent off-road performance. Horsepower is crucial, but not necessarily for work. So, which truck reigns supreme?

Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma is the most powerful midsize truck, but it’s a tight race. With 326 horsepower thanks to the i-Force MAX 2.4L hybrid option, the Tacoma accelerates to 60 in 6.2 seconds.
It’s important to note that the 326-hp option is only available on the top trim, the TRD PRO. This option also provides the most torque in its class, with 465 lb-ft.
Honorable Mention
The midsize truck segment is complex, and competition is tough. Only 5 horsepower separates the most powerful Ford Ranger from the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon. However, we have to give it to the Ford Ranger, with 315 hp, even though it only delivers 400 lb-ft, compared to the 430 lb-ft available in the Canyon/Colorado.

Most Powerful Compact Pickup Truck
The compact pickup truck isn’t known for power or performance, but one truck reigns supreme in this segment.

Ford Maverick
The Ford Maverick doesn’t necessarily shine in the performance department. However, the competition can’t catch up, and its numbers aren’t bad. The most powerful option offers 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft, although it comes with a CVT, which isn’t ideal for hard work.
The clear advantage the Maverick has is that it provides just enough of everything, from a truck bed to interior room to performance. So, it becomes a practical, economic option for those who want an urban truck.
This segment doesn’t have an honorable mention. Does this mean there’s a chance to grab market share?
Most Powerful Pickup Trucks In The Heavy-Duty Sector
Now, we’re discussing the heavyweights. This section must have power, as these trucks provide a platform for hard work. However, there are significant differences between what a gasoline engine provides and what a diesel power plant provides. So, if you want a heavy-duty tow truck, diesel is the right choice.

Ford Super Duty
The clear winner in the Heavy Duty sector is the Ford Super Duty, with 500 hp and an astonishing 1,200 lb-ft of torque when fitted with the Powerstroke diesel engine.
While acceleration isn’t exactly on top of everyone’s mind when talking about heavy-duty trucks, the Ford Super Duty is no slouch. It can reach 60 mph in around 6.3 seconds, and that’s downright amazing.
Honorable Mention
There aren’t many competitors when it comes to the heavy-duty segment, and most offer similar performance in horsepower. The Silverado HD earns the honorable mention for having 40 more horsepower than the Ram HD.
If you want torque, the Ram HD is your choice, with 1,075 lb-ft.
This list covers only options available as trims on non-specialized versions, not on different models. That’s why the Ram TRX and the Ford Raptor weren’t included. However, if you want us to do a list of special versions, let us know.
Another detail is that we haven’t included EVs. Again, it’s a list for another day.
