How to Reset the Maintenance Light on a Honda Pilot

To reset a Honda Pilot’s maintenance reminder, complete the indicated service, switch the ignition or power mode to ON, and use the reset procedure for your dashboard. Pilots with an oil-life display should return to 100% after an oil-service reset. The 2003 through 2005 models have a separate MAINT REQD indicator that clears with a button-and-key sequence.

The trick is matching the instructions to the controls in front of you. Honda has used a dashboard knob, steering-wheel RESET and ENTER buttons, and selector wheels. Even two Pilots from the same model year can have different displays.

Before pressing anything, record the service codes and check the invoice or your own maintenance notes. Changing the oil may leave other work due. Clearing every reminder can make that unfinished work disappear from the screen.

Which Honda Pilot reset procedure should you use?

Use the model year to narrow your search, then match the controls. The steps below cover U.S. Pilots with the factory displays described in Honda’s manuals. If your buttons or menu differ, stop and check the manual for your particular vehicle.

What should you check before clearing reminders?

Park the Pilot, set the parking brake, and leave the engine off. These instructions clear a scheduled-maintenance reminder. A check-engine light or an oil-pressure warning needs the response described in the owner’s manual for that warning.

For a keyed ignition, ON (II) is the position that powers the instrument panel. On a push-button Pilot, set the power mode to ON using the ENGINE START/STOP button with your foot off the brake. Check that the instrument panel is powered before entering the maintenance menu.

Complete the service associated with the displayed codes. On displays that offer individual resets, choose the completed item. Use All Due Items only after completing all the listed work. Keep the receipt and record the service date and mileage.

How do you reset the MAINT REQD light on a 2003 through 2005 Pilot?

These early Pilots use a Maintenance Required indicator. There is no oil-life percentage to restore.

1. With the engine off, turn the ignition switch to OFF.
2. Press and hold the Select/Reset button on the instrument panel.
3. Keep holding the button while turning the key to ON (II). Leave the engine off.
4. Continue holding for about 10 seconds, until the indicator resets or goes out.
5. Release the button.

Honda’s manuals for these years say the indicator comes on for about two seconds each time you turn the key to ON (II) during the first 6,000 miles after a reset. That brief startup appearance is normal.

How do you reset oil life with the dashboard knob?

Use this procedure for a 2006 through 2015 Pilot equipped with the basic information display and Select/Reset knob.

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Press and release the Select/Reset knob until the engine oil life appears.
3. Press and hold the knob for 10 seconds or more, until the oil-life display blinks or the reset display appears.
4. Release the knob, then press and hold it again for 5 seconds or more.
5. Check that the displayed maintenance codes clear and oil life returns to 100%.

Honda describes the blinking display in the 2006 and 2008 manuals and a reset-mode display in the 2015 manual. The second hold is measured in seconds.

How do you reset a 2009 through 2015 Pilot with SEL/RESET?

For a Pilot with the multi-information display, use the steering-wheel controls. The 2009 manual identifies this system on Touring models. The 2015 manual separates the procedures by display type.

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Display engine oil life using the SEL/RESET button.
3. Press and hold SEL/RESET for 10 seconds or more to open oil-life reset mode.
4. Use the information up/down buttons to select RESET.
5. Press SEL/RESET to confirm. The service code should disappear and oil life should return to 100%.

If you entered the menu before checking the service record, select CANCEL and press SEL/RESET to leave the reset mode.

How do you reset a 2016 through 2018 Pilot?

Honda’s manuals for these displays use the Maintenance Info. group and a RESET button.

1. Set the power mode to ON.
2. Navigate to the Maintenance Info. group on the multi-information display.
3. Press and hold the RESET button until oil-life reset mode appears.
4. Use the information button to select Reset.
5. Push RESET to confirm. The displayed maintenance items should disappear and oil life should return to 100%.

Selecting Cancel and pushing RESET exits without completing the reset. The manuals do not assign a specific number of seconds to the hold in this procedure, so watch for the reset screen.

How do you reset a 2019 through 2022 Pilot?

These Pilots use an ENTER button and arrow buttons on the steering wheel. The reset menu lets you choose which maintenance item to clear.

1. Set the power mode to ON.
2. Display engine oil life. Press ENTER repeatedly until the home screen appears, select Maintenance with the arrow buttons and press ENTER. Select Oil Life and press ENTER.
3. Press and hold ENTER for about 10 seconds to enter reset mode.
4. Use the arrow buttons to select the completed maintenance item, or All Due Items if every due item has been serviced.
5. Press ENTER to reset the selected item. Repeat for any other completed items.

Check the display afterward. An oil-service reset should restore oil life to 100%. A reset for another service item should clear that item’s reminder.

How do you reset a 2023 through 2026 Pilot?

For 2023 through 2025, Honda provides two dashboard procedures. The A-type meter uses the left selector wheel, and the B-type meter uses the right selector wheel. The 2026 manual specifies the right selector wheel.

In the illustrations in Honda’s 2024 manual, the A-type meter pairs a screen on the left with a needle speedometer on the right. The B-type meter is a full-width digital display with both dials drawn on screen.

1. Set the power mode to ON.
2. Press the steering-wheel Home button.
3. Roll the left selector wheel to the wrench icon, then press the wheel to open Maintenance Minder.
4. Press and hold the left selector wheel for about 10 seconds.
5. Roll the wheel to the completed service item, or All due items if all due work is complete.
6. Press the wheel to reset the selection. Repeat for any other completed items.

Right selector wheel on the B-type meter, 2023 through 2025, and the 2026 Pilot

1. Set the power mode to ON.
2. Roll the right selector wheel until the Maintenance Minder screen appears.
3. Press and hold the right selector wheel for about 10 seconds.
4. Roll the wheel to the completed maintenance item, or All due items if all due work is complete.
5. Press the wheel to reset the selection. Repeat for any other completed items.

Honda also permits a reset through the audio/information screen on equipped models. The steering-wheel methods above give you a direct route without having to match different touchscreen menus.

What do the oil-life percentage and service codes mean?

Maintenance Minder calculates remaining oil life from engine operating conditions. The percentage is an estimate of remaining service life. It does not tell you how much oil is in the engine, so continue checking the oil level as your manual directs.

On Maintenance Minder displays, 15% means service is due soon, and 5% means service is due now. At 0%, the oil has reached the end of its calculated service life. Negative distance indicates overdue maintenance.

Read the codes alongside the percentage. For example, on the U.S. 2022 Pilot, A calls for replacing the engine oil, B includes oil and filter replacement plus inspections, and 1 calls for tire rotation. Codes 5 and 6 call for coolant and rear-differential-fluid replacement where applicable. Those codes describe scheduled services.

If your Pilot says B1 and you have changed only the oil, review the rest of the B1 work before clearing the complete reminder. Honda’s code lists vary by market and equipment, so use the list for your vehicle.

Why is the maintenance reminder still showing?

• You dismissed the message. Switching to another screen can hide the notice while leaving the service reminder active. Enter reset mode and confirm the completed service.
• The power mode is wrong. Check that the ignition or power mode is ON before trying again.
• You released the control early. On the dashboard-knob system, complete both holds. On ENTER and selector-wheel systems, hold until reset mode opens, then select and confirm the item.
• Another item remains due. Check which code is still displayed and compare it with the work performed.
• You are following instructions for a different display. Match the button names and dashboard to the procedures above.

If the controls match and the reset still fails, ask the servicing shop to check it. Avoid repeatedly clearing items while guessing what work they represent.

Finish by reopening Maintenance Minder and checking the result. Keep the service record with the date and mileage. The dashboard tells you when work is due, and the paperwork tells you what was actually done.

Correction, October 2026. This guide was rewritten. An earlier version grouped every 2003 through 2009 Pilot under one oil-life procedure, and its 2009 through 2015 steps said to hold the knob for five minutes. Honda’s manuals call for a second hold of about five seconds on the dashboard-knob system, and the 2003 through 2005 models use a separate MAINT REQD reset.
