Older homes may not have planned for the increasing size of the American pickup truck when they designed and constructed the attached garage some 50-plus years ago. Even a two-stall garage may not be able to fit two modern vehicles inside, and for pickup trucks, it is not only a question of width, but it is a question of length and height clearance as well.

Truck bed dimensions

As mentioned earlier, it is important to know the dimensions of a truck before you purchase it so that you can determine whether or not the vehicle will be able to fit into your garage. The next important set of dimensions to understand is the dimensions of the truck bed.

Whether you are trying to figure out if a certain piece of furniture or cargo will fit in your truck bed or you are looking to outfit your truck with some bed accessories like a toolbox, liner, or cover, then you should always measure the dimensions yourself.

The first step is to measure the width of the truck bed. To make this measurement you will need to position your measuring tape against the inside edge of the bulkhead. Expand the measuring tape straight across to the opposite inside edge and write down the results.

If the wheel wells poke up into the bed of the truck, you should also measure the width between those wheel wells as well as make a special note of where the wheel wells begin and where they end when measuring the length.

Next, to measure the length of the truck bed, simply take a measuring tape and measure the distance from the very front of the truck bed to the inside edge of the tailgate.

With these measurements, you will be able to measure your cargo before picking it up to make sure it will fit in the truck bed. Remember to use proper safety straps, bungee chords, and rope to safely secure your cargo. If any cargo extends from your truck beyond the length of an open tailgate, make sure to fasten a bright fluorescent marker on the end of the cargo to warn other drivers.
