We used to imagine that only trucks were good for towing, but now one SUV has the highest towing capacity of any SUV, matching that of full-size trucks.

In the past, if you needed to tow anything more than 8,000 lbs, you had to resort to a truck. So, if you liked SUVs and going camping, you knew that, by force, your garage would house one of each.

This made perfect sense from a mechanical perspective, as SUVs are heavier and must use more of the engine’s power to move. However, with technology advancing so much, we’ve  seen performance figures increase considerably, leading some SUVs to tow impressive loads.

One SUV has the highest towing capacity in the market, but it’s not everyone’s favorite. The GMC Hummer EV SUV has the highest towing capacity with 10,300 lbs, but if massive electric land yachts aren’t your thing, there are other candidates on the list. Let’s look at the list.

GMC Hummer EV

The Hummer EV has a 10,300-lb towing capacity, but you must order it under very specific conditions. To get the most towing (in SUV form), you have to go for the 2X dual-motor trim, with 570 horsepower. It also comes with four-wheel drive, active air suspension, and a large battery pack.

Any package you choose, such as the Extreme Off-Road Package or a higher trim, will lower the towing capacity to anywhere from 9,800 lbs to 7,500 lbs. This happens because there are more features that add weight.

One thing to note about the Hummer EV SUV is that it’s massive, and while GM estimates 310 miles of range, chances are that this will drop considerably when towing. Not only that, but range also drops in winter.

However, while you don’t get a lot of range, you get one of the fastest-accelerating full-size SUVs on the market.

Spoiler alert: this is the only EV that makes the list.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has the highest towing capacity of any gasoline-powered SUV, redeeming Stellantis in recent years. However, to get to this towing capacity, you must order one with specific packages.

First, you need the Hurricane Twin-Turbo Inline-6 that puts out a respectable 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft, and the trailering package. In short, if you want to tow 10,000 lbs with the Grand Wagoneer, you need the Upland trim level, which starts at around $73,0000.

Another option is to buy one used in this trim. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has proven to depreciate significantly, making it an excellent purchase for resale. It might not be the first name to come to mind when answer what SUV has the highest towing capacity, but it’s up there.

Ford Expedition

There’s no way to have a discussion about SUV towing capacities without mentioning the Ford Expedition. It has topped the lists of what SUV has the highest towing capacity for years, but now it’s no longer the number 1. However, the Ford Expedition still has an impressive 9,600 lbs of towing capacity.

Fortunately, you can get such performance with the basic Active trim, but it must be in a 4×4 configuration, with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. Other trims that can also reach 9,600 lbs of towing capacity include the Platinum and King Ranch.

Any other won’t reach the maximum towing capacity, but you can still get a respectable 9,300 lbs with the Tremor and 9,000 lbs with any of the MAX trims.

Toyota Sequoia

When looking at what SUV has the highest towing capacity, the Toyota Sequoia is a strong candidate, but with a big asterisk in the specifications. Toyota famously ditched its legendary and reliable 5.7L V8 engine in favor of a series of hybrid powerplants. The twin-turbo 3.4L V6 is no slouch, putting out 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque, and the 10-speed transmission makes it one of the smoothest-accelerating full-size SUVs out there.

The Sequoia has 9,520 lbs of towing capacity, but it must be in SR5 and only in RWD. In short, it’s the most basic option out there. Any trim or upgrade that you add will eat away at the towing capacity, in some cases, lowering it by 400 lbs.

Lexus GX Overtrail

Toyota’s luxury division, Lexus, was never one to shine in the towing department. However, the latest version has stepped up its performance and is one of the best options for towing. The Lexus GX Overtrail has an impressive 9,096 lbs towing capacity, and that’s not the only reason why it’s an appealing option.

The Lexus GX Overtrail comes with full-time 4WD, countless features, plus a luxury interior. So, if you want to up your game, you know this is an excellent option. Interestingly, the GX 550 (the option with the highest towing capacity), doesn’t offer the hybrid powerplant. Instead, you get a gasoline-powered 3.4L V6 putting out 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Lincoln Navigator

The Lincoln Navigator is the Ford Expedition’s fancy and more successful brother, but it’s not as capable. Thanks to its luxurious interior, it has had to sacrifice some towing capacity. However, this SUV has the highest towing capacity of any luxury American SUV.

You need the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package to achieve this performance, and it’s available in all trim levels, as the Navigator has permanent 4×4 and a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 engine. However, the Navigator has one very particular condition that changes towing capacity, which you might  not see in other vehicles.

The wheels you choose will affect your performance: the 22” wheels give you 8,700 lbs, while the 24” wheels give 8,500 lbs in the standard chassis and 8,400 lbs in the Navigator L versions.

Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango has always held its ground in the quest to find what SUV has the highest towing capacity. While not the first vehicle you think of for towing, the Durango has admirable performance. As with other models, it all depends on the specs, but the Dodge Durango can tow up to 8,700 lbs, placing it in a tie with the Navigator.

You must order the towing package and the 6.2L V8 engine that puts out 710 hp. These options are only available in the SRT Hellcat and SRT Hellcat Jailbreak trim levels.

Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada got a breath of fresh air in 2025, and this redesign made it a solid option in the market for full-size SUVs that can also tow a considerable load. The new Nissan Armada comes with a twin-turbo 3.5L V6 that puts out 425 hp and 516 lb-ft, resulting in an admirable 8,500 lbs of towing capacity, as long as you order the towing package. This towing capacity is available in both 4×2 and 4×4 options.

The Nissan Armada isn’t as popular as other options on this list, but it does perform admirably, and the troubled automaker is trying to claw its way back to being a contender. What’s surprising is that the Armada tows more than American alternatives such as the Tahoe or Suburban.

If you want a more luxurious version, you can also aim for the Infiniti QX80, which is the luxury version of the Armada. It has the same performance, but it does cost $25,000 more.

If we had done the list of vehicles with the most towing capacity five years ago, the results would have been completely different, except for repeat models such as the Expedition. We would’ve included the Tahoe, which tows up to 8,400 lbs. This used to be a high amount, but technology and power plants have become so powerful that now, many vehicles are towing more than 9,000 lbs.

Interestingly, the Chevy Suburban has lost towing capacity with the newer models. The 2026 Chevy Suburban can now tow up to 8,200 lbs, when it used to tow 8,300 lbs.

When looking at what SUV has the highest towing capacity, you can also consider what you’ll be using the vehicle for, as not all the models here are the most practical. The Hummer EV might tow more than 10,000 lbs but it’s one of the largest vehicles in the market.

At the same time, vehicles such as the Sequoia and the Durango are smaller and, while they have lower towing capacities, they provide enough for the weekend enthusiast.

Price is also a factor. With vehicles becoming more expensive, the reality is that many of the SUVs on this list exceed $60,000, and this can become limiting. Interestingly, cheaper options are emerging, such as the Armada, with an entry price in the $50,000 range.

So, if you’re looking at what SUV has the highest towing capacity, the most important aspect is understanding what you truly want out of your vehicle. If you’re only occasionally towing, then many vehicles on this list fit the bill, without having to buy a truck.
