SUVs
The best family cars are most likely going to be SUVs. After all, SUVs are the most sold vehicle type in the world, and the US is not different.

Here’s the list of the 2026 best family SUVs and one minivan:
- Best Compact SUV: Hyundai Tucson
- Best Compact Hybrid SUV: Hyundai Tucson Hybrid
- Best Compact Electric SUV: Hyundai Ioniq
- Best Midsize SUV (2-row): Honda Passport
- Best Midsize SUV (3-row): GMC Acadia
- Best Midsize Hybrid SUV: Hyundai Palisade Hybrid
- Best Midsize Electric SUV: Hyundai Ioniq 9
- Best Full-Size SUV: GMC Yukon
- Best Plug-In Hybrid SUV: Mazda CX-90 PHEV

Overall, this list is fascinating. There’s no mention of Toyota or Subaru. At the same time, Hyundai’s dominance is clear, winning 5 of the 10 categories. You could consider it as six wins, because Kia is a sister company of Hyundai.Â
Cars
Are cars still a thing? With most of the world migrating to SUVs, sedans are harder to find, but there are still a few out there. In this case, one company takes top prizes for the limited available categories in the 2026 best family cars.
- Best Midsize Car: Honda Accord
- Best Midsize Hybrid Car: Honda Accord Hybrid
While there are compact cars, they aren’t ideal for families, because of limited cargo space, which is a critical factor, according the US News research team.
Trucks
Trucks can be excellent family cars, especially as they’ve become much more geared towards comfort and luxury, when compared to the past. In this case, it’s surprising to see that no American automaker ranked high.
- Best Midsize Pickup Truck: Honda Ridgeline
- Best Full Size Pickup Truck: Toyota Tundra
What’s clear from these results is that US News values reliability as a critical part of the 2026 best family cars. After all, when you buy a car that will haul your kids, you want to know it won’t be breaking down.
At the same time, it’s also important to highlight that 2026 best family cars aren’t necessarily the cheapest. This is a tough balance to achieve, especially because cheaper cars might not rank as high in critical aspects such as safety and reliability.
Some of the safety features that many researchers look for are more airbags than average (with some SUVs having 9), driver aids such as lane-assist systems, parking assists and rear-seat reminders, for drivers to always check the back to ensure they haven’t forgotten anyone (or a pet).
Or, it’s also likely they don’t come with many family-friendly features. While cost is increasing for these vehicles, they aren’t on the other extreme either. Instead, most of them are in the middle of the pack when it comes to pricing. That’s not to say that they are cheap.Â
